WIILIE & JOE

Round 1.  Game 8.     AAR from the Heer viewpoint.

The game started with the German forces establishing strong positions on each flank with a platoon, mg42, and a panzershreck. The remaining forces cautiously moved into the village, meeting only slight opposition.

The U.S. probed both flanks, but it was to little to late. The German forces were established and the U.S fell back.

Next came stronger probes supported by armor and jeeps with .50 cal MGs. The U.S. lost an M-7, on the German left flank and two jeeps on the right flank (one with a berserk, wild ride through the center of the village). Heavy infantry fighting on both flanks resulted in the U.S. forces falling back again. A Sherman on the German left flank also withdrew before I could get a clean shot at it with a panzershreck.

In the center, the Germans extended their forward positions to the fields and scattered trees to their front. They then met the main body of the U.S. infantry, hiding in the woods at the bottom of the hill. Also, two U.S. AT guns were spotted just right of center, in the small woods.

Heavy (105's?) artillery started raining down on the German center as their armor reinforcements arrived.
The shelling continued for several minutes. However, the German armor began maneuvering to exploit the weakly defended flanks.

A puma on the German right ambushed and killed an M-7 and continued to envelope the right flank. Two very brave German squads rushed out of the fog, assaulted and killed the AT guns. The U.S. left was now an open door to be exploited since the U.S. infantry had evaporated.

The shelling stopped and the U.S assault began. However, by this time, the Germans had established a Puma on the right flank, a Puma and a Lynx on the left flank (also an open door), a 250/8 (75mm) half track on the left center, and two PzIVG on the right center.

U.S. infantry advanced up the hill to the village and two Shermans began their assault through the wheat field. As the U.S. infantry routed the German infantry platoons in the scattered trees, they were slowed by very accurate fire from two MG42s, a squad, and the Company HQ. The Shermans eliminated the 250/8 track and the German center was bending almost to the  breaking point.

However,  just as the U.S. infantry was regrouping, the two PzIVGs arrived and the infantry assault evaporated, the panzers killing or routing all the U.S. assault forces. On the German left, the Puma got two great side shots on the Shermans and left two burning hulks in the wheat field. The Puma from the German right flank enveloped the U.S. position and planted itself firmly in the U.S. rear (pun intended, or should I have said bootie), shooting at the fleeing infantry.

At this point, the U.S. commander, recognizing superior German equipment, manpower, and leadership, wisely surrendered.
